However, depending on the complexity of the product, softwares for professionals can become very expensive. This is especially important for students and those who are on a tight budget. While many of these tools cost money, there are still a multitude of softwares that are available for free that give close to the same experience as those that professionals use.
We have collected a list of 10 free architect and design softwares that can be used from small, student projects to bigger architectural companies. The selection includes three categories: BIM, 3D/CAD, Rendering, and Illustration. These suggestions will give a great alternative.
BIM
What is BIM?
BIM software, or Building Information Modeling software, is a 3D design and modeling tool that helps professionals work together on building projects. BIM’s collaborative function uses digital representation of a building’s physical and function aspects to improve the quality and efficiency of a project. These softwares are primarily used by professionals but can also be utilized by students who want to challenge themselves in using a professional software and for those who want to streamline their workflow for faster project production.
1. Revit
Revit enables AEC (Architectural, Engineering, Construction) professionals to design, simulate, visualize, and collaborate on projects with great accuracy and detailing. The program is made by the company Autodesk. Revit is one of the most popular BIM software used amongst professional architecture firms.
Revit, along with many other programs offered in the Autodesk suite, is free for students through their educational program. You can sign up for a free 1 year license and apply for yearly extensions.
2. Archicad
Archicad is a software suite for architects, designers, and planners that also combines 2D and 3D drafting, visualization, and other BIM tools. This professional software is also used for a complete workflow of architectural design, from concept to construction.
Students are entitled to receive the fully functional education version of Archicad for free. You can sign up for a free 1 year license and apply for yearly extensions.
3. Vectorworks
Vectorworks is a CAD and BIM program that includes all 2D and 3D tools and technology. The program provides powerful tools for 3D modeling that can be used to create, present, and manufacture designs. Built-in database and worksheet capabilities to help track different data and information. There is a host of import and export formats to allow for easy file sharing between teammates.
Vectorworks’ Design Suite software can be accessed for free if you are a student through their educational license.
3D Modeling/CAD
What is 3D Modeling/CAD?
3D modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) software are tools that allow users to create and manipulate 3D models of objects ands censes. They are used in a variety of industries, including architecture, engineering, design, entertainment, and gaming.
4. Rhinoceros 3D
Rhino can create, edit, analyze, document, render, animate, and translate NURBS curves, surface and solids, subdivision geometry (SubD), point clouds, and polygon meshes. There are no limits on complexity, degree, or size beyond those of your hardware and modeling knowledge.
Rhino is what my university primarily used for 3D modeling and CAD work.
Rhinoceros 3D is available free of charge during their 90 day trial. Students who participate in their educational license can get an 80% discount (as of September 22, 2024).
5. AutoCAD
AutoCAD is a 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software application developed by Autodesk. It is a general drafting and design application used by many industries like architects, project managers, engineers, graphic designers, city planners, and other professionals to prepare technical drawings (primarily).

Rendering
What is rendering software?
Software rendering is the process of generating an image from a model by means of computer software. Rendering is used in architecture, simulators, video games, movies and television visual effects and design visualization.
6. Lumion
Lumion is a 3D rendering program that helps architects, designers, and other visualization professionals create realistic and stylized renderings of their designs. It allows users to showcase their projects by turning their projects into images and videos.
Lumion offers a free student version of its 3D rendering software for full-time students at colleges, universities, and other higher learning institutions. The student version is valid for one year, but can be renewed and upgraded as long as the student remains enrolled.
7. TwinMotion
TwinMotion is a powerful real-time 3D visualization software, widely used in architecture, construction, urban planning, and design. Developed by Epic Games, it offers a user-friendly interface for creating high-quality, photorealistic renders and immersive virtual environments. Originally built on Unreal Engine, TwinMotion allows users to create 3D models, renderings, and animations quickly and efficiently, making it an accessible tool for students and professionals alike.
Twinmotion is free for students, educators, hobbyists, and companies that earn less than $1 million annually.
8. Blender
Blender is a free and open-source 3D creation suite, known for its versatility and wide range of tools for modeling, animation, rendering, and post-production. Developed by the Blender Foundation, it offers robust features that rival commercial software, making it an excellent tool for students and professionals alike.

What is illustration software?
This refers to a subclass of application software for graphic design, multimedia development, stylized image development, technical illustration, general image editing, or simply to access graphic files.
9. InkScape
Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor, used for creating and editing scalable vector graphics (SVGs). It is commonly used for designing logos, icons, illustrations, typography, and complex drawings.
